WHAT IS PANS/PANDAS?
Pediatric Acute-Onset Neuropsychiatric Syndrome (PANS)
Pediatric Autoimmune Neuropsychiatric Disorders Associated with Strep (PANDAS)
PANS/PANDAS is a complex medical condition that now affects 1 in 200 children in America. It often emerges following an infectious trigger, such as strep, mold, Lyme, mycoplasma, or another microbe. In response to the infection, the immune system misguidedly launches an attack on healthy brain cells in the basal ganglia, leading to central nervous system dysfunction and the onset of neuropsychiatric and other symptoms. The best chance of recovery involves early diagnosis and a multi-pronged approach to treatment aimed at resolving the underlying infection, reducing inflammation, and rebalancing the auto-immune activity of the immune system.
